The Art of … Turkeys

BonnieMurrayArt

November is here and it's time to talk turkey.

The bird we've come to recognize as a "Thanksgiving" turkey
is classified as a heritage turkey, and could be any one of 8 breeds.

Now, the birds we buy at the supermarket for our big feasts are most likely
a breed called the broad breasted white turkey,
known to accommodate people's preferences for lots of white meat.
My family, however, always lunges for the juicy, dark thighs.

I found several handsome depictions of the heritage turkey.

Yalipaz Enchanted Art

Yali makes her home in Herzliya, Israel.
She's an artist who creates impish little dolls from felt.
Her sweet fairies, animals, and elves radiate personality and are sure to steal your heart!
As I look at each one, I appreciate every tiny snip and stitch that was done by hand!

So cute and so collectible, they're sold at Yali's Etsy shop, Yalipaz Enchanted Art.
Stop by to see her fabulous brooches as well.

Bleecker Street, NYC

Bleecker1

A gorgeous autumn afternoon for my daughter and me to head to NYC!
This time, our goal was to explore Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village.

Bleecker2

A fabulous lunch at Frankies Spuntino, 570 Hudson Street.
We decided on salads.
Hers was the Honeycrisp Apple, Eggplant & Blistered Pepper,
mine, the Roasted Beets & Avacado with Balsamic Vinegar.
A. Mazing.

Bleecker3

Don't you love this pretty flower box outside of Frankies?

Bleecker4

OK. So, maybe it wasn't a good idea to stop in the middle of the street
to take this photo, but I couldn't help myself.
{At least the white hand was still lit}  ;)

Bleecker6

The spelling of this shop's name is a clue to the owner,
for those familiar with designer Marc Jacobs.
Bookmarc is at 400 Bleecker St.
There's a fine selection of books on photography, fashion, and art,
along with classics like Wuthering Heights and The Catcher in the Rye.
You'll see Marc Jacobs bags, keychains and accessories as well.

Bleecker7

The "eye-catching" centerpiece of the shop was this
enormous lit eyeball,
which actually blinked open and shut.
Funky.

Bleecker8

This bronze sculpture at the corner of Bleecker & W. 11th St.
is called "The Family". It depicts a family of 5 - like mine!
Created by Chaim Gross, who dedicated it to former NYC Mayor Ed Koch.

Check back for pics of the very cool Chelsea Market!
A highlight of the day, and way worthy of its own post.

Bleecker11

Time to re-fuel.
We chose The Diner, located in the Meatpacking District
at the corner of 9th Ave. & 14th St.
Best veggie burgers ever!

Bleecker12

We love the Big Apple!
Always guaranteed marvelous mother-daughter fun!

Missed Connections by Sophie Blackall

After illustrating over 25 children's books, Australian-born New Yorker Sophie Blackall
has immersed herself in an ongoing project, this time for adults.
She came up with the idea upon perusing the online classified ad site Missed Connections.

Do you remember ever making eye contact with a stranger,
or having a chance encounter,
only to have that person move on and out of your life?
"If only..."
"What if..."

Sophie's creativity kicked in, and soon she was illustrating these brief moments of possible love.
She compiled them into a book, Missed Connections: Love, Lost & Found.
and was thrilled to be commissioned to do a poster for NYC subways.

Enjoy these favorites of mine,
plus a great Etsy video with Sophie telling us about the experience.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.
It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
