So, what, geographically speaking, is meant by "Nordic?"

The root word "nord" is French for "north", and so by "Nordic", 

we refer to the northern European countries of 

Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland.

They're also known as Scandinavia.

Winter Elves of Lennart Helje

Swedish artist Lennart Helje is known for painting carefree little elves

in Nordic landscapes that have been blanketed in snow.

His droll, red-capped gnomes enjoy taking leisurely hikes through the countryside 

and making new woodland friends along the way.

Helje's amiable illustrations have been featured internationally 

on UNICEF Christmas cards, as well as on postal stamps and Christmas seals.

As you enjoy his paintings, be sure to take in the sense of hushed calm
they exude with their soft tones and relaxed moods.

Pippi Longstocking

Does "Villa Villekula" mean anything to you?

If you've read Astrid Lindgren's beloved tale of Pippi Longstocking, 

then you know just what I'm talking about!

Pippi was one of my childhood favorites. 

Her kooky personality and wild, wacky adventures had me entranced.

I dug around to find several Pippi gift items that would be fun to give along with a copy of the book.

At Huset, I found a charming Pippi and Herr Nilsson doll set, plus some adorable birch trays.

I found cute ceramic mugs and a wooden Villa Villekula at Scandinavian Design Center.

Toy figurines for the house, plus some fun clothing can be seen at Lekmer.

 

Weren't Tommy & Annika so lucky to have a friend like Pippi?

Cathrineholm

Cathrineholm is a brand of enamelware from Norway. I have to level with you. At first, I thought these pieces were designed by a woman named Catherine Holm. I was glad to learn that I'm among many who've made that mistake. :)

Initially producing agricultural equipment and wrought iron, Cathrineholm operated from 1907 to 1970. Its enamel kitchenware became known as very tasteful Scandinavian design. The well-loved lotus pattern is thanks to designer Grette Prytz Kittlesen.

These mid-century items are highly collectible. So many vibrant colors! It would be fun to have a piece or two to coordinate with your kitchen color scheme. I just love this retro look!
