Monsters Among Us Via Subway Doodle

 

To help pass the commuting time on the New York City subway

between Brooklyn and Manhattan, it started by taking photos

then sketching and doodling in some monsters with an iPad.

It caught on, and Subway Doodle became a phenomenon!

Here's a look at these big, somehow lovable, blue monsters.

The monsters have come up out of the subway and into the city!

 Subway Doodle is generously donating 100% of the proceeds 

from the sales of this print, "Helping Hands," 

to help out with the hurricane recovery efforts

for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean!

A Lovely Afternoon Tea at the Duke House in Wellsville, NY

The Duke House Tea Room & Bakery - what a find!

We couldn't help but enjoy ourselves in this elegant home-turned restaurant.

The sweet buttercup yellow beckoned us to come inside. 

Notice the curved roof line above the front porch; 

an intriguing detail of this 1850 Georgian revival house.

It was unfortunate that our timing was between lunch and dinner, 

but when we learned that they served afternoon tea, we were tickled!

My daughter and I were in store for a real treat!

I loved the gorgeous mantel display in the front salon!

40+ loose leaf teas from which to choose!

We decided on Yoga Blend~ tulsi, chrysanthemum blossoms, saffron, marigold petals, 

green cardamom, hibiscus, peppermint, sarsaparilla, raspberry leaves, and lemon.

It was fabulous, believe me!

First we were served an out-of-this-world cranberry-rosemary scone.

The Duke House is well known for its scones. I see why!

Next, a selection of tasty finger sandwiches.

They were happy to accommodate our request for vegetarian selections.

Decadent blueberry cream cake was the perfect finishing touch!

This unusual wall hanging caught my eye.

When the home was renovated in 2015, these boards

revealed 3 layers of wallpaper, peeled back to show 

changes in decor through the years.

What a clever idea to display them as wall art,

paying homage to the history of the house!

In addition to several inside dining areas, 

a cozy covered patio was available for outdoor seating.

We look forward to returning to the charming The Duke House!

Greenmarket Union Square - NYC

A recent day in the Big Apple landed us at a fabulous farmer's market at E. 17th Street.

The Greenmarket of New York City’s Union Square hosts up to 140 vendors 

each Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A loyal following of urban residents shows up to shop from a huge variety 

of fresh, organic produce and the like from nearby farms.

Fruits, flowers, vegetables, eggs, honey, herbs, seafood, mushrooms and so on!

Greenmarket is operated by a non-profit group called GrowNYC, which began in 1970 

to encourage New Yorkers to create healthy, environmentally-conscious communities.

Teaching folks about recycling, how to set up community gardens,

how to compost, and about the importance of good nutrition

are just some of the great things that GrowNYC accomplishes!

Here’s the Greenmarket mission :
“...to promote regional agriculture by providing small family farms 

the opportunity to sell their locally grown products directly consumers, 

and to ensure that all New Yorkers have access to the freshest, 

most nutritious locally grown food the region has to offer.”

Game boards at the ready for a friendly round of backgammon or chess.

Fishs Eddy - New York, NY

We found a fabulous shop in NYC called Fishs Eddy! Their vision:

"Commercial quality dish and glassware with plenty of other things to make people smile."

And smile, we did, as we wandered up and down the aisles

to take in dinnerware, gadgets and linens with a fun spin!

Cake stands in terrific colors!

True vintage china~ American-made restaurant ware.

A super display of vintage mugs.

Random oil portraits like this one were scattered here and there.

A rainbow of colored American hand-pressed glassware

looked lively against the big window.

Nostalgic printed dish towels, some with a New York City theme.

A vintage eggbeater chandelier.

This "Brooklynese" line is what first attracted me to Fishs Eddy!

Please pass the buttah.

Colorful pressed glass dolls line up beside a huge bucket of marbles.

Those same dolls were the stars of the front window display!
