African Zulu Telephone Wire Baskets at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

After dining at the Animal Kingdom Lodge's Boma restaurant,
these colorful woven baskets caught my eye.
A testimony to Disney's devotion to all-encompassing resort theming,
this display was surrounding, of all things, a restroom sign.
Of course I had to take both a closer look...and some photos.
These very cool baskets were made of telephone wire by
talented South African Zulu artisans. Such craftsmanship!

Now, I have a story to tell of my own telephone wire artistry!
When I saw these baskets, I immediately had a warm and fuzzy flashback
to my childhood days, of times spent with my best buds Shelley and Sue.
Their dad had worked at Bell Telephone and gifted them with the
"treasure" of a spool of multi-colored telephone wire.
Being the crafty kids that we were, we spent hours
cutting, twisting and twirling the wire into kooky, curlicued rings.
Tiffany's had nothing on us.

I was curious to see what I could find online that resembled our rings.
This pic from Pinterest, showing the first stage of the ring,
was the only thing I could find. Our next step was to
tightly curl each of the wires into a cluster and voila!

Just one of the tons of good times we girls had back in the day.
Before video games & cell phones, naturally.

And yes, one can definitely see the beginnings of
my artistic creativity that eventually led to my
handcrafted jewelry shop, Paisley Beading!
(Shameless plug. Ha!)

All About Animal Kingdom Lodge's African Ijele Mask

We always enjoy meandering through the Jambo House at Animal Kingdom Lodge.
There are more than 500 African artifacts on display throughout the resort.
It’s considered North America’s largest collection of African art!

One particular item that is especially intriguing is the huge, colorful sculpture
at the back of the lobby, near the entrance to the Arusha Savannah.
It’s called an ijele, and believe it or not, is actually a mask.
Yes, it’s a 16’ high, 240 pound mask.

An adolescent boy is chosen to wear the mask, or headdress.
He must excel in a number of challenges of strength and skill
before his is given this high honor in the community.

An excellent example of the Igbo culture in Nigeria, the Ijele Masquerade
originated centuries ago and is known as the King of Masquerades.
An elaborate dance is performed as the Ijele parades through the village.
This is a rare event that only occurs every 10 to 25 years
at times of festivals, important celebrations, burial ceremonies,
and during dry seasons to call forth fertility and a plentiful harvest.

The ijele takes several months to construct.
It’s decorated with figurines that signify various aspects of life.
There are trees, animals and festive tassels.

The ijele has an upper and lower segment, joined by a large python for royalty.

Patterned fabrics are used in vivid colors, especially yellow, red and black.

A horse is often included, representing greatness and majesty.

Here are photos from the web, showing the ijele in action.

If you happen to visit the Animal Kingdom Lodge, be sure to find the ijele!

I could watch those Tumble Monkeys all day!

Tried the Yak & Yeti Restaurant this time.
The seared miso salmon was over the top!

My mango pie dessert was fantastic!
(Thanks for that tip, Joanne.)

We got up close and personal with this ostrich
